Boredom Is the Doorway to Creativity

Summer Screen Guide workbook page

Screen time guilt might be one of the most universal feelings of summer parenting. The days are longer, the kids are home, and a screen is often the fastest way to get five quiet minutes. Then the guilt creeps in — am I doing this wrong?

Here's a reframe worth sitting with: boredom is often the doorway to creativity. Technology is part of modern family life, but kids also need time to imagine, explore, create, and connect. The goal isn't necessarily fewer screens for the sake of a rule — it's more space for the experiences that actually help kids thrive.

Research backs this up

Kids benefit from outdoor play, movement, reading, creativity, and face-to-face connection. When screens replace these experiences, wonder has less room to grow. None of that means technology is the enemy — it means screens work best as one part of the day, not the default for every quiet moment.

Boundaries, not deprivation

The most successful families don't eliminate screens entirely. They create simple boundaries and protect what matters most. A few low-effort ways to start:

You don't need all five at once. Pick one, let it become familiar, and add another later if it's still serving your family.

Create screen-free spaces, not just screen-free times

Alongside timing, it helps to protect certain spaces in your home: no devices at meals, no devices in bedrooms, device-free family outings, or a device-free car ride once a week. Pairing a boundary with a simple alternative — a reading basket, an art or creativity station — makes the transition far easier than just taking something away.

"Boredom is often the doorway to creativity."

Make it a family goal, not a rule you enforce alone

Try naming it together: this summer, what are you choosing more of — imagination, outdoor play, connection, creativity, reading? And what are you choosing less of — scrolling, device battles, constant entertainment, background noise? When it's framed as something the whole family is choosing, it stops feeling like a punishment and starts feeling like a shared rhythm.
